Wednesday, February 6th – A Walk in the Winter Woods

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERACrisp and clear … the chill barely felt
Stillness … sounds amplified …
In the distance … chirrrrrrup-up …
An unknown bird calls
Startling and resonant, the knock-knock-knock
Of a hairy woodpecker – her drumming belying her size
A flurry of bark flung in her search for food
A faint and tiny chittering … beech leaves rasping in the barely breathing air
Blue, blue, blue sky
The caw of crows
The subtle presence of the past –
A marker here … a planting there …
Lives lived –
Their ghosts keep me silent company while
Their stories are hidden – lost to time
The sun at just the perfect angle lights up
Diamonds sparkling among the leaf litter
Two foot prints pass each other
They, like me, on a walk in the winter woods.
